A01. Wudang Taichi – The 13 Postures

A1 Wudang Taichi – The 13 Postures

elementary: 4 months (16 lessons); intermediate: 3 months (12 lessons)

As the most valuable of Wudang, the 13 Postures was created by Grand Master Sanfeng. It is especially excellent in exercising the body and practicing Qi. While featuring in softness and continuity, it solves the attack along with steps and touch, harmonizes by being easy-going in manner but highly principled. It also practices Qi to enhance the spirit, avoids the strength, strikes the weakness and leverages attacker’s strength to hit back. Taking control through late moves, and combining movement and steadiness are the keys to improve both internal and external strength.

The 13 Postures consists of symmetric motions strong in attack and defense. It contains three kinds of inner school boxing: the breathing guidance, collection & nutrition and Huanyuanzhuang. The whole series practices internally the eight meridians and the related five organs, and externally its five steps and eight methods which mix the inner school boxing for attack and defense and health preservation together. When practicing, the practitioners must meet the six mixtures coordinating the postures and the spirit in the form of posture & consciousness, consciousness & Qi, and Qi & spirit. The six mixtures can strengthen the inner and outer body so as to extend the life expectancy. The key of the motion is continuity like floating clouds and flowing water with natural rhythm. The subtle combination of the strength and softness can counter strong attack with light movement.  The movement and steadiness look like needles in the cotton as it’s the combination of strength and softness. The breath focuses naturally with deep, long and even movement reaching the root. By doing this, the aim of improving the health and life expectancy can be reached.
